Beaver ConceptsDesign & Build

Electrical Design Consultants in Kenya

Electrical design determines how power reaches every part of a building safely: the supply from Kenya Power, the distribution boards and cables, lighting, sockets, earthing and protection. Beaver Concepts provides electrical design in Kenya for homes, apartments and commercial buildings, calculated from the actual loads so the installation is safe, adequate and ready for backup power or solar.

Design from the load, not from habit

A wiring layout copied from the last project will be wrong for this one. Electrical design begins by listing every load the building will carry: lighting, sockets, water heating, cooking, pumps, air conditioning, lifts, and anything planned later such as an electric vehicle charger or a borehole pump. Adding these up, with sensible allowance for loads that will not all run at once, gives the maximum demand that decides the size of the supply, the main cable and the main board.

Getting this right avoids two familiar problems. An undersized installation trips, overheats and needs costly rewiring. An oversized one wastes money on cable and switchgear the building never uses. Kenya's supply is 240 V single-phase or 415 V three-phase at 50 Hz, and choosing between them is a design decision based on load, not preference.

What the design covers by building type

The scope grows with the building, but the principle is the same: every circuit is sized, protected and documented.

Typical electrical design scope by building type
BuildingSupplyMain elements to design
Family houseSingle-phase, or three-phase for heavier loadsMain board, lighting and socket circuits, water heating, earthing, surge protection, provision for solar and a backup supply
Apartment blockThree-phase with a main distribution panelMetering per unit, rising main, common-area lighting, pumps, lift supply, emergency lighting, generator changeover
Office or retailThree-phaseDistribution boards per floor, small power, lighting layouts and controls, UPS and data provision, generator changeover
Light industrialThree-phase, higher capacityMotor circuits, power factor considerations, protection coordination, earthing and lightning protection
The supply arrangement is confirmed with Kenya Power during design. Their requirements and connection process change, so we check the current position for your site.

Safety, backup power and future proofing

Earthing and protective devices are what stop a fault becoming a fire or a shock. We specify the earthing system, residual current protection and surge protection appropriate to the installation, and coordinate them so a fault trips the smallest possible part of the system.

Because outages are a fact of life, we design the changeover arrangement for a generator or inverter from the start, separating essential circuits from non-essential ones so a small backup source can keep lights, the fridge and the water pump running. The same thinking makes a later solar installation straightforward, because space on the board and a route for cables have already been provided.

Installation must be carried out by contractors licensed by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority. We specify to that standard and inspect the work against the design before it is covered up.

How electrical design works with us

  1. Stage 01

    Load schedule

We list every present and planned load and establish the maximum demand.

  2. Stage 02

    Supply and distribution concept

Supply type, board locations and cable routes are agreed with the architect and structural engineer.

  3. Stage 03

    Circuit design and calculations

Cables, protection and earthing are sized and checked for capacity and voltage drop.

  4. Stage 04

    Lighting and small power layouts

Drawings show every light, socket, switch and circuit reference.

  5. Stage 05

    Utility coordination

We prepare the information required for the supply application and coordinate with Kenya Power where needed.

  6. Stage 06

    Inspection and testing

The installation is inspected during works and tested before it is energised and handed over.

Questions we are often asked

Do I need three-phase power for my house?

Not necessarily. A typical home runs well on single-phase. Three-phase is worth considering when you have large loads such as several air conditioners, a borehole pump or an electric vehicle charger. The load calculation decides it.

Who can carry out electrical installation work in Kenya?

Installations should be done by electrical contractors licensed by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority. We design and specify the works and check that the installer holds the correct licence.

Can you design so I can add solar later?

Yes. We leave space on the distribution board, reserve cable routes and separate essential circuits so a solar and battery system can be added later without rewiring the building.

What is the difference between electrical design and installation?

Design produces the calculations, drawings and specification. Installation is the physical work by a licensed contractor. Separating them means the installer works to a documented design you can check.

Why do my fuses or breakers keep tripping?

Common causes are an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance or a circuit protection device that is incorrectly sized. An electrical assessment identifies which, and whether the installation needs correction.

Do you help with the Kenya Power connection?

We prepare the load information and drawings the application needs and coordinate the requirements. Connection timelines are set by Kenya Power and vary by location, so we advise you early on what to expect.
